A good read for any midwife July 13, 2001

The easy-to-read style of this book is it's strongest feature. The individual chapters each focus on a specific issue summarising and evaluating research and tacit knowledge alike. The chapter authors offer a balanced and informative starting point for any midwife considering one of the subjects either for personal or academic development. The chapters are as follows - The Place of Birth, Midwifery Care in the First Stage of Labour, Artificial Rupture of the Membranes, Nutrition and Hydration in Labour, Pain relief in labour, Spontaneous delivery, The midwife's management of the third stage of labour and HIV infection - a midwifery perspective. Each chapter also contains a valuable reference list. Although this book was published in 1990, the content facilitates the midwife to gain a valuable insight into a subject on which to build with the use of further literature.
