5 out of 5 stars Fantastic, informative book   February 11, 2008

My mother gave me the earlier edition of this book when I was pregnant with my first child. Over my four pregnancies I have refered to this book more than any other. It covers all aspects of pregnancy, childbirth and the first few weeks with a newborn. It is written in a highly informative yet easy-to-read style with diagrams and lovely pictures. I have bought this book as a gift for several friends and family (at least 4 times). If you only buy one pregnancy book, buy this one.

4 out of 5 stars A trustworthy and compact reference tool   March 7, 2005

Another mum lent me this book but I intend to buy it for all my friends when they are pregnant. It gives clear information on all the choices mums-to-be face, especially surrounding the birth itself, and makes an excellent starting point for further research as well as a trustworthy reference point whilst in hospital.

5 out of 5 stars My bible!   January 21, 2005

I love Shelia Kitzinger! I got loads of books when pregnant with my first baby, but this is the one I kept coming back to. Illustrations are clear and moving and the text is encouraging and informative. I seriously attribute my 3 hour drug-free labour and wonderful water birth to Shelia Kitzinger's influence!

5 out of 5 stars Great for reference   June 27, 2004

There were so many pregnancy/childbirth books to chose from that I found it hard to decide on a title. I opted for "The new pregnancy and childbirth" by S.Kitzinger and found it to be brilliant. A lot of the information is the same as some of the leaflets that your midwife will give you anyway or the same as what can be found on the internet but it makes a great reference book with all topics covered.

1 out of 5 stars Frightening and unhelpful   September 2, 2003

Sheila Kitzinger paints the medical profession in an extremely bad light. The section on how to write a birth plan contains a statement along the lines of "doctors tend to be knife-happy" so you should list all the procedures you don't want. This and many other similar statements made me very nervous ahead of the birth.

The birth I had in the end was an emergency c-section, necessary to save my life and my baby's life. This was an unnecessarily terrifying experience due to the fear encouraged by this book. Thanks to Kitzinger's rigid view of what a birth should be, I found myself feeling a failure, as I couldn't give birth in the way she advocates. I can see now that this is rubbish, and I took great pleasure in dumping this awful book.

Don't buy this book, it's a very distorted, one-sided view that is likely to make a traumatic experience even more traumatic.
