BEST GAME IN WII WORLD EVER? May 30, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
JUST A QUICK NOTE BEST GAME ON THE WII EVER. I AM SO HOOKED ON THIS GAME AND THAT IS SAYING A LOT AS I GET BORED QUICK. THIS AS BEEN STUCK IN MY WII SINCE LAUNCH DAY AND I LOVE IT. 1 OR 2 HOUR A NIGHT BEATING MY OWN LAP RECORDS AND PLAYING WITH OTHERS AROUND THE WORLD. WHAT MORE DO YOU NEED FROM A GAME, JUST WISH THERE WAS LESS BOMBS IN THE 150 CC CUPS AS ITS HARD AS HELL BUT THATS WHY I AM NEVER BORED WITH IT TOTAL BLISS.
GET IT NOW SOD THE COST.
If you're still looking for a reason to buy the Wii, this is it! May 29, 2008 This has to be one of the most anticipated games on the Wii, if only because people have been curious as to whether Nintendo could reproduce the same level of success for this game on the Wii as they have for all their other consoles. Well the answer to this is an emphatic yes! In fact, Mario Kart on the Wii is not only the best ever version of Mario Kart to date, but the best game on the Wii full stop.
The game has 4 game modes, Grand Prix, Time Trials, Vs Race and Battle. Games can be played single player or multi-player with up to 4 players, and there are 16 different tracks to race on initially, rising to a grand total of 32 once additional tracks are unlocked. You can race as any of 12 characters, then once you've chosen your character you can then choose what vehicle (including motorbikes!) to race in. The choices you make here are quite important, a heavy character like Bowser means the vehicle will have slow acceleration but a very fast top speed, whereas a light character like Toad has fast acceleration but a slower top speed. Characters like Mario and Luigi are good all-rounders. Additionally, vehicles have a whole host of strengths and weaknesses in terms of speed, handling, drift, etc. You'll need to experiment with different combinations of character/vehicles until you find a combo that suits your driving style.
A superb enhancement Nintendo have made to character selection is the ability to choose your own Mii as a driver. This is a fantastic personal touch that adds to the fun. You'll have to earn the right to use your own Mii though, when the game first starts this option is locked, it can only be unlocked after you've achieved a certain level of success.
The icing on the cake to Mario Kart though has to be online play. This adds a completely different dimension to the game and should give Mario Kart the kind of repeat play longevity no other Mario Kart game has had. Fancy playing 11 other online players from around the world? Easy! Just select the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, then you and 11 other online players are grouped together, just vote for your favourite track, then let the racing begin! I experienced no lag whatsoever racing other opponents online, you'd never know you were racing across the internet which is a testament to how brilliantly the online element has been integrated into this game.
The online goodness doesn't stop there either, Mario Kart Channel lets you compare your race times with players from all over the world, view rankings, enter competitions, and even race against downloaded 'ghost data' from other players. Best of all, you can also choose to race against specific friends, instead of strangers, by inviting their Mii to a race.
As to the racing itself, like all Mario Karts before, it is very accessible and easy to jump straight into. You won't find any horribly unforgiving tracks where you spend the whole race spinning off and finishing last every time. But just because Mario Kart is very playable doesn't mean it lacks any depth. It has a lot of very clever subtleties that can only be learnt through experience. The more you race, the more tricks you learn and the more skills you acquire, the game is full of surprises.
The races themselves are hilariously fun, the graphics, though cartoony, are very impressive and suit the game style perfectly. Physics are also very realistic in terms of negotiating the track itself, and when colliding with other players or obstacles. The fun element is always ever-present though, there are loads of different items that can be picked up and used against opponents. These range from the useful, like the familiar red shells that home in on an opponent, to very advantageous, like lightning that makes all your opponents shrink, to the damn right insane, like Bullet Bill, who turns you into a bullet and catapults you through the track at high speed, knocking over anyone in your way. One thing to bear in mind is that when you lead a race the items you receive tend to be a bit less useful, whereas if you're struggling you tend to get the really good items like Bullet Bill or the ink-spraying Blooper, or a host of other amazing items. This is Nintendo's way of balancing out a game and means even if you're in the lead you still have to keep your wits about you as anything can hit you from out of the blue and change the course of the game.
There are also some nice touches from Nintendo, like suddenly seeing some of your Mii's in the crowd during a race cheering you on, or racing round a track and glimpsing a poster with your Mii's face on it. This is the beauty of Mario Kart, it's not just the big things that Nintendo have got so right, it's the little things as well. Buy it!
Bravo Nintendo May 28, 2008 Just got my Wii last week and Mariokart was my first game. Got an extra wheel for my girlfriend and we've been having an absolute blast.
It's fantatstic fun, and so accessible. The online is great - we've played friends across the sea, and have roared with laughter for the first time in years. Perfect to de-stress after a hard day.
Gaming Nirvana. Nice one Nintendo!
Forget the wii, this is the best game on any console! May 27, 2008 The wii was designed for games like this, the wheel feels great, it's comfortable to hold and easy to use and hilarious to watch others using.
Althought the basic idea of mariokart clearly hasn't changed much, there is lots of new features on this game. Bikes are now available as well as the traditional karts which add up to over 30 playable vehicles all with a custom paint job depending on which character you use. Speaking of which, nintendo has welcomed back some old as well as new characters to this game ranging from baby peach, birdo, bowser jr or funky kong. As well as this there are 32 tracks (16 new, 16 retro) new weapons, tricks, wheelies, manual drifting, streamline and much more.
Unlike previous versions, there are now 12 cars competing in each race, making it even more frantic than before, this is highlighter further with the multiplayer option. 3 of your friends and 8 AI players racing round a small track would be crazy enough, but add in the mariokart weapons and it is just insane, and i for one love it.
There is tonnes to keep you interested in this game, for the basic player who is only really interested in the multiplayer it's easy enough to unlock all the tracks and a few extras, but with so much to unlock through time trials and achieving high rankings on grand prixs this game will keep even the most battle hardened mariokarter absorbed.
This a truely irresistable game, the graphics, sound, playability and gameplay far outstrip anything else available on the wii at the moment, a must buy for any wii-owner, and for non wii-owners a great reason to get one or start saving up!
Game for parties May 25, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Great game, simple to play, hard to master. Hours of gameplay as you try to beat the computer in various races and time trials to unlock more characters/vehicles and spot shortcuts. Is interesting & all, but where the game shines is online against real people or in multiplayer mode at house parties.
You get a steering wheel add on in the box. This comes in handy for throwing at annyoing people walking in front of the TV while playing, but isnt much cop for driving with - use the nunchuck instead.
Is worth playing the timetrials in expert mode to learn the shortcuts & tactics before venturing online, otherwise you're going to spend a lot of time at the back.
Small gripe: its a tad unfair, and you often get zapped right at the finish line and end up 8th or 9th. That part is rather irritating. Everything else is excellent fun.
