Such a disappointment July 2, 2002 7 out of 14 found this review helpful
Just finished this book and simply had to come on amazon to see what other people thought of it. After all the good reviews and promising plot, I was prepared to really enjoy this book. However, after a whole month I realised how badly I was struggling to finish it. Didn't want to quit since I had a passing interest in the ending but really did not want to waste any more valuable reading time than necessary. Now I can see there are many people who, like me, found the characters dull, and the book just impossible to really get into. As a reader I am generally easy to please - I will read pretty much any subject as long as the book is well written. Midwives simply isn't. What a great idea for a stry but such a wasted opportunity. By the end I really couldn't give a damn what happened to Sibyl or Connie or particularly the pathetic father. I believe this is result of poor writing by the author. Please, do not waste your time on this book, especially if you have a medical background.
overall it was a good book. September 17, 2001 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
In the beginning i found that the story was a little hard to get into. I really enjoyed the extracts that Sybil wrote of the different deliveries. The parts i found a bit dull was the long time spent in court. I fount the ending very good and couldn't put it down at all from about 30 pages from the end. Overall it was agood read and would recommend it, but I wouldn't say go out and buy it. Happy reading.
a gripping read July 13, 2001 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
I enjoyed this book immensely - the storyline is great and I thought it well written. I couldn't put it down!
I ate this book in one gulp! December 28, 2000 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I could not put this book down (and my eyes showed it the next day). A very simple and straightforward story told from an interesting angle which kept me turning the pages. Circumstances often drive decisions and this book illustrates that beautifully.
Suprising! June 26, 2000 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Yes, there are borng parts of this book but overall I found it quite fasinating and enjoyed it's layout with exerpts of Sybil's diary at the beginning of each chapter. I read half of the book, and wondered how on earth the author could find enough to write about for the second half. This is what got me through to the end but once I got there I realised I had really enjoyed it!
