It was OK August 27, 1999 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I read this book...cover to cover, and I thought it was Ok. But I never really understood the ending. Oh well. I wouldn't recomend you buy this book. I would however reccomed that you get it from the library so you don't waste your money. Because i did skip through the boring parts. I might have fallen asleep if I hadn't. However everyones tastes are different. If you are interested in the subject of midwifery, which I am, then this would be a good book. I wish the area of Connie and Tom would have been more than just a time passer.
Engaging, full of mystery, great characters, a must read... August 25, 1999 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Great writing, great characters, engaging plot.
Not very compelling...hard to finish August 20, 1999 I did not finish this book, although I gave it a fair chance by reading through the first 140 pages or so. The topic of midwifery did peak my interest, which is why I started to read it, but I found it sullen, dragging, and rather depressing.
An elequent story with an unexpected ending August 12, 1999 I enjoyed this book so much -- it seemed like it was hardly long enough to hold an entire story, but it more than succeeds. Even at the end, when you think you know all the circumstances surrounding the main tragedy, this book still manages to surprise.
Heart wrenching. August 8, 1999 I found the idea behind the book extrordinary. Never has there been such a vivid account of, first of all, a midwife. Secondly, the realization that a time of wonder and joy can turn in to such an unspeakable tragedy. I loved every page of the book. There have been few books that touched so many of my emotions.
