Investigative analysis of the art of ancient medicine November 15, 2001 14 out of 18 found this review helpful
Dr Helen King portrays the route from ancient medicine to today's technological medicine in short readable chapters with many interesting facts on the origins of terms of diseases and homeopathic treatments. Being a short book, 71 pages, font 10, it is easy to read and enlightening for Classical readers in antiquity on Hippocrates and Galen. However, it is packed full of information on routes to libraries and the papyri such as the Ebers and John Smith as torch lights to dusty shelves and far away reference mediums. Salerno in Southern Italy being mentioned in records of medical libraries, which is now in Naples. The 'Suggestions for further study' in the back is extremely useful as is the guided bibliography for a pathway for interested medical persons and light readers in the classics and ancient civilisations in medicine. Dr Helen King's personality comes across in this book, and is the first one I have read after spending time at her home and the 'gladiator' whilst hearing her speak and co-ordinate the annual ancient history symposium at Reading University. This copy is a gift any practising alternative medicine, student or medical person would delight to have in their waiting room or collection. A must for the doctor who has everything or those with an investigative mind in the past. Greek and Roman Medicine are intertwined in a way that is not to in depth and involved. Latin and Greek formations of the terminology such as 'influenza', the term for astrological association of the 'influence' of the stars, and 'retina' -net-like (Latin) are just some of the 'nuggets' in understanding the influence of Greek and Roman anthropology and learning, many have become fact such as poisons used as medicine. Clearly, the past in ancient, renaissance or the scientific revolution has an impact on our bedside manner and explorative nature with tools of a magnification and computer assisted searching. I must add I am only a student and researcher and this was understandeable even to me although my interest in finding and proving medicines of the past is in environmental science degree obtained.
